I absolutely LOVE ArcTeryx clothing. It is some of the best and sadly The Backpacker is one of the only place that carries it locally. I am all about supporting my local shops but not when I can get a ArcTeryx Alpha SV jacket new on eBay for 400.00 while Backpacker wants $600.00+ Dont get me wrong, theyre selection is amazing but their staff could use improvement in the knowledge department. Which brings me to my other point. When asked if they carried the ArcTeryx LEAF line, the employee looks at me like I was speaking another language. An ENTIRE LINE of clothing they were not sure if they had. So to test my assumptions that they did not know anything about what they were selling I caually asked the other employee if they could tell me what the XCR on XCR Gore-Tex stood for. Again I was met with a blank face. (Extended Comfort Range) So going into easier questions I finally gave up when they could not tell when I should choose a Hardshell over a Softshell. Seeing that they were getting no sale out of me, their attitudes turned into a smug, pretentious, what the hell do you want demeanor. I was polite but very taken aback at the overall attitude of the employees, their experience with the goods they are selling and the ridiculous prices. But hey, when I want to buy my daughter a pink TNF Denali fleece at 300% mark-up, Ill know where to go.

The selection of a big store, the service of a neighborhood joint. Welcome to the best of both worlds- the Backpacker. Im new to camping, like - NEVER tent camped in my life. I walked in here, having purchased a tent/sleeping bag/sleeping pad bundle over the phone, probably looking like a deer in the headlights. But man, from the moment I walked in, I knew I was in goods hands. Garrett and Hailey greeted me in such a friendly way and sent me upstairs to Tim, who spent SO much time with me! He took me through so many of the basics of what I need to do to successfully camp with my kids. And I could tell he really enjoyed it! I left with a wonderful list, and I feel like I can totally do this! Instilling confidence in someone is a gift, and Tim did a great job! Then, I went and checked out the sale section, and Ryan was so helpful, too! He really knew his Northface jackets and helped me find the perfect one for what I needed. Susie was another friendly face at checkout. I drove an hour+ from Mandeville to get here, and I will definitely be back. Places like this are (unfortunately) rare, and worth a drive. Wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Way to go, everyone!

Special ordered the Yakima skybox and drove from New Orleans to Baton Rouge to pick up. Their staff, starting with Walter, were terrific. The original understanding was that their staff would "assist" in the installation of the Yakima racks and skybox. Walter basically took over in the 90 degree (felt like 100) heat and patiently walked me through every step - making sure the box was perfectly aligned and re-adjusting to make sure the rear tailgate door could clear the box. Then my wife went inside to get a missing buckle replaced on an old Eagle Creek two water bottle fanny pack. They went through a bucket of misc. buckles, found one that would work and charged her $1.50. We moved here from New England and had been spoiled by ready access to Eastern Mountain Sports. REI and L.L. Bean. There are a number of poseurs of outdoor recreation stores in NOLA - none come close to what we were accustomed to...until we drove to visit Backpacker B.R. Totally worth the 90 minute drive.

This review is a long time coming. Ive been coming to this store for almost a decade. And Im sad to say I dont think Ill be coming back. It seems like in the past few months a lot has changed there. The employees dont seem as happy. At least during the week. There has been one of two days Ive gone in and seen everyone very chipper. But they usually seem fearful of management and do what they can to avoid being belittled. Ive seen it happen. Im not familiar with the the new manager but he is not kind or genuine to anyone especially not his employees. Sad to see a place of such joy wither like this.

This was my first time visiting The Backpacker. The service was incredible. Chloe helped me find shoes for an upcoming trip. She was very knowledgeable about the products and what I would need. She was also patient with me. The only downside (and the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5) was that the store did not have my size in the shoes that I loved and neither did the Lafayette store. This also happened with another pair of shoes. Still, I went home with a great pair of shoes and a greater understanding of the best materials for activity. Thanks, Chloe!

I just started backpacking, and I love The Backpacker. Yes, I can sometimes find items cheaper somewhere else, but I have to spend a lot of time looking, and I dont get the expert advice that I get at the Backpacker. After trying other places - online and local - I pretty much have decided that its worth checking there first. They have a great staff, they have everything you need, and they carry the best brands. I even bought my dogs backpack there. I was able to let her try it on instead of just hoping for the best and ordering it online.

Wonderful experience purchasing my Grand Trunk Firebelly Print hammock at The Backpacker! Upon walking into their Baton Rouge Louisiana location, I was greeted by friendly staff asking if I needed help finding anything. I was immediately directed to the location of the Grand Trunk hammocks. I initially did not see the style I wanted so I asked if there was stock elsewhere and they found the print that I wanted! Thanks to the helpful & knowledgeable staff, I can enjoy my spring break in comfort with my new hammock.

First off, let me say that I love a deal but Ill pay for excellent customer service at a local store that may or may not cost a few dollars more. Ryan sized and fitted my friend and I for packs that we were looking at for a trip to Nicaragua. Excellent customer service and knowledge about the products he showed us made our experience at the backpacker a good time and made me feel that this was money well spent. Thank you!

Just go to Masseys! This place has some cool equipment, but its overpriced. I wouldnt mind if I had good encounters with employees, but my experiences with the workers have been far from impressive. Theyre arrogant and condescending, and the chances that youll be in a bad mood after interacting with them are pretty high. Seriously, save yourself the trouble and go to Masseys or order your outdoor gear online!

We always find that the staff at The Backpacker in Baton Rouge is friendly and helpful, and today was no exception. Shelly helped us find the perfect hiking shorts/pants for an upcoming trip, and took care of ordering for me since they didnt have the style/size I wanted in store. She made the experience hassle free and gave good recommendations for both my husband and I. Thank you!

Best Place for Fathers Day Gifts! I can rest assured that virtually anything from The Backpacker that my children pick out for their dad for fathers day will be well received. This year it was a Yeti Hopper two 30. The kids gave it early because they just couldnt wait! All around, The backpacker is a great place to go to get quality products, on-trend, with great service.
