This place has really nice stuff, but is expensive, even for Iowa City. To top it all off, I would NEVER recommend taking anything here to sell/consign. The last time I took stuff there, I got offered $64 for several thousand dollars worth of new (w/tags) and vintage items. When I attempted to remove some of the items (I assumed that the buyer had found some stuff to be worthless, when offering $64 for thirty-six pieces of clothing) it became ridiculous. Each time I would take one item from the pile and ask "If I kept this, then how much would you give me?" the buyer would subtract $20 from the original quote. After asking this question three times, I pushed the first three items towards him, and said "Well, how about I sell you these three things, keep the rest, and take only sixty dollars," he refused. Turns out, he had decided that EACH of the 36 items I had brought in had a value of $20 to him, but he was only willing to offer $64 for the whole pile. I took my pile elsewhere, and was immediately given $970 for the items at this elsewhere. I had hoped that this was perhaps a fluke, but the very next time I attempted to consign items there, I went through an almost identical farce with a completely different person. When I commented to her that her offer was insulting, and told her the truth about my previous experience, she all but accused me of lying, and told me that "nobody would be willing to pay that much for junk like yours." Unfortunately, she was incorrect, as one of her customers followed me (and my items) out to the parking lot, where I was more than happy to sell her my lovely things for a discounted price of $700.

I was asked to leave the store today due to the fact that we re-sell some of the items that we buy on Ebay. This discrimination cannot be overlooked. We pay the same price for these items that any other customer pays, we also shop for our children, and for ourselves. In addition we also have loved shopping there and have been extremely positive and polite to the owner and her family while shopping there over the past 18 months. It is unfortunate that I felt like I was a victim of this discrimination. We have spent thousands of dollars over the this period of time in this establishment. This consignment store re-sells items for others and profits from this practice, we do the same, not to mention that we have helped them rotate inventory and helped their customers profit while doing so. I was ashamed today when asked to leave, even after trying to reason with the owner. I would advise anyone that enjoys shopping with "The Second Act" to reconsider after being treated the way that I was today. I will be filing with the BBB and perhaps an attorney due to this error in judgement. So sorry that this had to happen.

I have shopped at The Second Act as far back as I can rember. I have early memories of browsing their kids and Halloween section when they were located by First Avenue HyVee. The selection of apparel, jewlery, shoes, and costumes is excellent! I can always find something I like and the price reflects what the item is worth. I usually find good vintage belts, Free People goods, North Face fleece, and purses when I spend the afternoon shopping there. Although, I generally dont find shoes (I wear size 11), I know others leave with at least two pairs of shoes. The displays are always unique and reflect the staff. It is obvious those who work there, put time and effort into making the place feel fun. The best time to go is during their Fall and Spring Opening. You will find the best merchandise during their bi-yearly openings; snacking on cookies and fruit while browsing their selection.

For almost 9 years I shopped at The Second Act, while I was in Iowa City earning my PhD. Ive shopped in Miami, Dallas, DC and NYC and The Second Act is one of my favorite places to find a wide selection of stylish, classic, well-cared for clothes -- in my size, 12. This past month, after three years away, I was back in Iowa for a visit and stopped in to the shop. Kelsey and Melissa greeted me by name (!) and helped me to find an arm-load of great pieces. As I was checking out, they checked to see whether any of the clothes I consigned all those years ago had sold. Id forgotten all about those clothes! They found my balance and credited it against my purchase. In addition to all of the wonderful things Ive always known about the team that runs The Second Act, I can add proof that they are mindful and absolutely honest. What a great store!!!

I love the Second Act because, buying wise, youre always going to find some really interesting stuff with a diverse inventory. Theres something for everyone (men, women) here, including an assortment of clothing, shoes, accessories, and more. However, the room to walk around in the store is incredibly cramped, so I just wish there were some way to manage space a bit better. Selling stuff here has been hit and miss for me, because sometimes I find that they dont take my clothing but give no concise answer. I take very good care of my clothes, and when I bring them in theyre washed and wrinkle-free. Id prefer to hear a better answer for why its not being accepted.

Long-time fan of Second Act. They have a great selection of items for work and play and the price is right! They rotate their displays sometimes, but they typically have a section with career clothes and I have found many great pieces for work. I like that they have unique pieces and youll be able to find something no one has, but they also carry a wide variety of respected brand names as well. In ~8 years of shopping there its always pretty busy, but the staff is friendly and courteous no matter whats going on. Well worth a visit.

I will not or will I ever refer anyone to go to this store. They are not interested in customer satisfaction what so ever. I purchased something in good faith brand new not even opened out of the package. I brought it back unopened the next day, I was looked at and dealt with not a trace of respect, and was told "We dont accept returns!" This was not a used item it was brand new and was in the same condition as I bought it hours ago. I will never do business with these people and I suggest you think twice also...

Ive lived in Iowa City for many years and have been going to the store for nearly 20 years. I keep coming back because I almost always find something I like to buy. Its consistently clean merchandise, and if its a little more expensive than Goodwill, the selection is a whole lot better. As for service, Ive never had a problem. I generally just dig for myself but whenever Ive asked for help finding things, I got the help I needed, usually from the owner.
