Ive always had a good experience with Jacks. They do a good job of keeping their prices pretty close to "online prices". If you add in shipping and FFL transfer fees to your "online" prices, youre usually saving a little buying direct from Jacks. I find them quite personable, some may find them a bit course. They are very knowledgeable, and like to do things the "right" way. (Not the kind of place for those whom are easily offended. But then again, most dedicated firearms stores arent. The easily offended crowed can always go to the "BIG" chain stores and pay 10-30% more if they wish to be coddled.) But if you want good service, from knowledgeable individuals, youll get your monies worth at this place. I will continue to be a repeat customer as long as they keep up the great work.

Ive known Jack for longer than either of us care to remember. If you want a friend or a buddy to chat with, go to an AA meeting or a senior center, if you want quality firearms, reasonable prices, solid information from a knowledgeable experienced gun dealer go to Jack. If he thinks a particular gun is wrong for you he wont sell it to you. If he thinks you shouldnt own any firearm he is probably right. I have bought many handguns , mostly used, from Jack. I have been very satisfied with each and every one. Yes he is a bit grumpy, he has a right to be! He is as old as I am, guys our age have earned that right! Jack has little tolerance for stupidity, but will try to educate newcomers to the gun world if you are willing to listen.

If you truly want to know anything and everything about guns - go here. If you want to just know how much a gun costs - go to a Big Box store. If you want affordable pricing - go here. I am sure the ammo prices may have been a couple bucks higher before, but go to Scheels or Bass Pro and find out the difference now. You should always ask around and shop ammo anyways. As far as saying the customer service is "atrocious" that is a bit harsh. The guys at Jack Smith Gun Sales go to work for you to find what you want. if its not on the shelf, they look all over the globe to try and find it for you, and if they cant find it they at least call you back, the Big Box stores will not.

I came from out of town (3 hour drive) looking for dealers with S&W M&Ps, particularly a 209302 or a 208300. I asked about the 209302 and was told, "No one buys .357 Sig." When I mentioned that one could swap the barrel on a full size 40/357 I was pretty much looked at like I was some sort of fool and was told that they were not sure about that, I wasnt looking for an argument. I was told it could be ordered but I said that wasnt going to help considering I was from out of the area. This place looks like it has been open since 77; poor lighting and a poor attitude. Lost sale and I have no reason to ever return here again when in Des Moines.

I came in to look at the selection of pistols and AR-15s, and had to endure a tirade from the owner about why a common person like myself shouldnt be able to own one. What is this guy doing selling these weapons if hes morally opposed to them? Things only went downhill when I mentioned that I had an Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons - he asked me what county I was from and said he was surprised that my sheriff would issue a permit to someone my age. I walked out right then... Ive served in the Army for six years and this guy has no business deciding who should and shouldnt be able to exercise a fundamental right.

Purchased a shotgun from Jack the other day; his prices was better than Scheels (Returned that one) and was more knowelgeable to boot. Showed me some tricks on the gun as far as assembly, safety mechanism, and how to take care of the gas seals. The guy is just straightforward and tells you how it is. I think some of the lower ratings here are due to the fact that some folks just dont take that well. He stands by what he sells and doesnt give you any flowery sales crap. I appreciated it enough to go ahead and buy some cleaning supplies and ammo while there and will return for more as needed.

Jack Smith Gun Sales is where you want to go if you like being treated with respect, excellent service from some of the most knowledgeable and honest folks Ive met. Ive been in a lot of gun shops over the years, and Jacks is by far the best of them all. Honest, knowledgeable, quick service is what you will get. Do us all a favor and buy your guns and related equipment from an independent shop, especially Jacks. Oh, I forgot to mention, Jacks price was about 10% less than the 2 big box stores in town. Go figure, better price and service.

If you are looking for great prices on guns and an honest opinion go to Jacks. I have bought a few times myself and bring friends and family to this shop to purchase. Better prices on guns than Scheels or Bass Pro but ammo is a little higher. Jack will tell you flat out what is crap and what is worth your money. He can be pretty blunt but he also gaurantees anything he sells. So if you want to go buy cheap crap and have a salesman make you feel good about it go elsewere if you want quality and good prices go to Jacks

The positives: Jack Smith gun sales know their stuff inside and out. Which I would expect from their years and years of experience. The Neutrals: Their ammo (9mm) is a little pricier than Scheels when I purchased (by 2$ for 50 rounds). To be fair this may be due to increased demand and very low supply. (run on ammo when this was written) The negatives: Customer service is atrocious, but lets face it, no one goes here for customer service, they go for knowledge of staff.

My Husband and I purchased two hand guns, ammo and a holster for this shop and he was nice and accommodating and knowledgeable. We go back a couple days later and after we spent a boat load of $ there he refuses to sell us ammo for the handguns that we just purchased from him!!!! We can see the ammo right behind him on the shelf. His explanation was "Only if you buy a gun" I will not be recommending his shop to any of my friends or family.

I have been shopping at Jacks for 11 years. Very knowledgeable. His selection is better than the big box stores. He doesnt sell any junk or anything that he doesnt trust for quality. He does not do transfers. He only wants to sell his inventory. He has an eye for collector grade stuff too and he always has something interesting behind the counter. His prices are fair and he knows his stuff inside and out.

Visited this place for the first time today. Guys behind the counter were smart and friendly, and the shop was tidy, well organized and stocked with just about everything a shooter could want. Bought ammunition, no firearms, but they will definitely have my business the next time Im in need of either.
