I will never return to this store until I am an expert at sewing and purchasing fabric. Three of four employees I encountered at Mill Outlet were extremely rude and resisted being helpful. As a beginner seamstress, unsure of how to purchase fabric for my first sewing project, I went to Mill Outlet to buy supplies. I was overwhelmed by the selection! They have so many beautiful choices that I didnt know where to begin. A male employee asked if I was finding everything okay, so I took the opportunity to ask every question I could think of regarding fabric choices for my project and how to find different fabrics located within the store. The first few questions he seemed happy to answer but then he began to look impatient by my lack of knowledge and hurried away before I could ask anything more. An hour later, when I finally chose the fabric and supplies I wanted, I encountered the rudest employee-in-training I have ever come across. Not only was she annoyed by my lack of knowledge, she lacked information herself, and she was clearly upset that she had to ask a more-experienced employee all of the questions I was asking her! The more-experienced employee treated me very kindly and began to quiz me about the type of project I was working on. She opened my pattern and showed me how the pieces would be laid onto the fabric and explained my options for the amount and type of fabric I could buy. The rude employee repeatedly said "We are not allowed to help the customers like that. I dont know why you are helping her like that. I was told by the boss that we cant let them open their patterns here on the counter and we cant tell them how much fabric to buy." While the kind employee was away from the counter helping another customer, I was left to the mercy of the rude employee, and I made the terrible mistake of asking another beginners question: "if the directions say that I need 2 yards of 25" does that mean 1 yard of this 45" will do?" "I have no idea," said the rude employee. With an increasingly irritated attitude she said "I dont know anything. Im just learning." Then she turned to another employee standing next to her and said "This lady wants to know how much of this fabric to buy." The other employee shook her head and said "I dont know, I cant say." The rude employee-in-training then said to me, "See? We arent allowed to tell you." Something is seriously wrong when new employees are specifically trained not to be helpful. I will never feel comfortable in this store unless I am accompanied by an expert or become one first.

I need a fairly obscure sewing notion, and none of the big chain sewing stores have it. I went to Mill Outlet, because while Ive never been bowled over by their friendliness or commitment to service, Ive never had a bad experience there and they tend to have things that no one else does. I called first, to avoid wandering around the store unable to find what I was looking for and talked to an associate named Kristy who was really quite helpful. She told me that she didnt find exactly what I needed as a packaged set, but they had a package in a smaller version (for reference), and she was pretty sure we could "build" the set I needed if I came in. So I went in, and the store was busy, but I offered to wait until she (or someone else) could help me. I was assisted by another associate who was polite enough but was clearly confused by my request. She kept suggesting things that were obviously not right, and each time I, very politely, told her that it wouldnt work. After a few minutes, a gentleman who I suspect is the manager or possibly even owner, came over and told her that if I was "still making up [my] mind", there were lots of other people who needed help...even though I was looking to make a purchase and clearly not just a time-wasting customer. She told him what I was looking for, as attempt to "pass off" me as a customer, and he just walked away. I was annoyed, but went on looking by myself until someone else was available. I was approached by another associate offering to help, but as I was explaining to her what I needed, this gentleman interrupted again and told her to "go help the other customers." She said to him "Shes looking for--" and he said, complete with an eye roll, "I know, I know, a bigger set," in the most contemptuous tone of voice I have ever heard from a retail employee. I told him I was no longer interested in spending money at his store and walked out. It is unfortunate because I always try to support local, independent businesses first, and Ive spent a lot of money at Mill Outlet over the years, but from now on I will be shopping elsewhere.

I am a native and have shopped here through-out the years. I dont sew regularly, so I am not a "regular" to where they would recognize or remember me. I had a very specific need to make a costume, NO other fabric store in town came even close to something I could use. I not only found what I needed for the costume there, but I found much more! I have never had a problem with the staff, they took my credit card with no issues. I dont often see children in the store, mostly because it is an outlet, the aisles are tight to fit the tremendous inventory, so children who cant keep their hands to themselves would very likely be tough for the parent. I like that the aisles are tight...no wasted space here because every area has product. Plus, I love that I am supporting a local business, not some national chain. If you want fabric and sewing supplies, not crafts, not card making, not dried flowers...just a large selection of fabric, including interior design and faux fur -- then this is your place. My most recent trip I had great service. I have been there when they are just slammed with people and are more rushed, but I have never had them be rude to me.

My feelings on this place are torn. Ive been here a few times and never really experienced anything outstanding, but they do have a wide selection of fabrics and trimmings. Prices are kinda high, but worth it if you find something special or just prefer to frequent local businesses. I was here again a few days ago and have to say I will not be going back due to the way I was treated. While not going out of their way to make it a bad experience, no one made an attempt to make it a good experience. In my time in their store I passed 6 different employees and was never once greeted or asked if I needed any help. I have an "alternative" appearance, and had 4 of the 6 employees blatantly staring at my tattoos instead of making any attempt to act like adults. The other 2 were busy cutting fabric, so Ill give them the benefit of the doubt. All in all, I have not received much of this type of treatment since moving to Colorado, and Mill Outlet made up for it all within 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, reading the negative reviews had deterred me from shopping at this fabric store. BUT, I own a business making boutique style clothing and needed something very specific. I searched the internet and drove all over Colorado Springs with no luck. Today, I finally broke down and went here. I was nervous as I had my 9 month old with me and the reviews all said it was not a child friendly place.... I am so glad I went! The staff were wonderful. They were helpful and took every opportunity to help me with my purchase. The owner even came to me to see if he could help answer any of my questions. My impression of him is just a sweet old guy with a very gruff personality and voice. They had exactly what I needed here and so much more! Best fabric selection in Colorado Springs. I will return.
