I want to start this review off by noting that Gillis Jewlers does in fact provide really good rings, Ive had several friends who have had their engagement/wedding rings made there. That being said, I was extremely disappointed in John Gillis as a person. John comes off as polite and friendly, but me and my fiance saw a completely different side of him over the week or so that we dealt with him. I will explain how, but to put it shortly, he tried to take advantage (financially) of me and my fiance by certain lies which he told us. We were even more disappointed by this because he is good friends with some people from our Church (though he does not know this). Initially, John offered me a price of $900-$1200 for my fiances wedding band...a standard price Im sure. I returned 3 or so days later to Gillis to ask if i provided my own gold would the cost be cheaper to make the wedding band. John said it would be cheaper, then quoted me the same price of $900-$1200. I didnt make a big scuff about this, even though it didnt make much sense. John then told us that the 6.5 gram 14k ring (which we wished to have melted down in order to make my fiances wedding band) would be more than enough gold, that in fact, we would have gold left over which could be credited back to us. John initially said he would pay 80% of the price of gold for whatever gold was left over after he made my fiances wedding band...this was a fair price. This price, however, changed 1 day later when I came back to Gillis; John then told me that he could only offer 60% of the price of gold. When I questioned John about the sudden increase in money which he would be profiting from any gold left over after my fiances wedding band was made, he began to explain this is how he puts food on the table for his family, and assured me that him paying nearly only half of what gold is worth was more than fair. This was a complete lie, anybody who knows anything about gold knows that you should expect to receive roughly 80% of the value of whatever gold you are selling. For instance, if you have a $1000 dollar piece of gold, you could expect to sell it for about $800; John Gillis would offer you $600 for your $1000 piece of gold. After my discussion with John about this, he then informed me that the ring would no longer cost $900-$1200, that it would in fact now cost $1300 even. There was no honest explaination for this increase in price; I can only guess that John was offended that I questioned him about his dealings so he raised the price on me. Knowing that my fiance badly wanted he ring to be made at Gillis, I bit my tongue and walked in his shop with $1300. As i was about to walk about with my receipt, John slipped in the conversation that we would "adjust the price later" if need be. I questioned him on what this meant and he stated that there would not be enough gold in the 6.5 gram ring (that we provided) which he was going to melt down in order to make my fiances wedding band (which was only going to weigh 3 grams). I mentioned that I could not pay more than $1300 because I am a college student who pays my own tuition, rent, bills etc and this is all I had. John then pushed my money back towards me and told me that was none of his concern and that he did jobs like this 4-5 times each week. I have never writen a review about any business until now. If you do choose to go to Gillis for whatever reason, I suggest knowing what your gold is actually worth before going it (do not take his word for it); I also suggest trying to get a firm price up front so that it will not be "adjusted" later. John, if you read this...you now know how disappointed in you we are.

My fiancee and I purchased our wedding bands from here and we couldnt be any happier. My only regret is that I didnt get my engagement ring from here. The owner is very personable and very willing to help us out. We both decided from now on that we will be getting all of our jewelry from Gillis. Also, he creates a lot of his own jewelry in his store, so he doesnt have to send out to have your stuff made and you can be almost certain that your piece is original and not from a catalog.

Im very appreciative for my experience with Gillis Jewelers and I recommend it to all who need their jewelry repaired. I had brought my wedding ring in for repair of a damaged section and replacement of an accent stone. I found the work to be of great quality and felt the price to be very reasonable. Gillis Jewelers also has very nice custom design pieces available. I was very pleased and will return for additional service and purchases in the future. Many thanks for a job well done.
